Teaching computer ethics along with digital competences: A student-centered course and its impact
This paper’s goal is to discuss a course that is designed to address digital challenges of teacher education at the University of Vienna In a university-wide survey we found that our students feel that digital competences are underrepresented and not adequately addressed in our teaching program. While we evaluated that some of the proposed changes will have to be dealt with on a curricular level, we discussed other solutions we as researchers and lecturers can address directly. Therefore, in this paper we will briefly describe the original research amongst 4000 students and the follow up inquiries, point out the most relevant findings (for this paper) and describe in detail how we addressed some of the issues stated by the students by designing a new pilot course and collaboratively create new Open Educational Resources to address similar challenges in schools’ classrooms. In our first run of this course, we asked the students to take part in different ways of offering feedback in order to improve the course on a weekly basis and, even more so for its next run. With this case example, we aim to create a student-centered course that addresses some of the most desired changes.
