AI-Enhanced Game-Based Learning for Agile Project Management: A Student-Centered Approach to 21st Century Education

AI-Enhanced Game-Based Learning for Agile Project Management: A Student-Centered Approach to 21st Century Education

Abstract

This research-to-practice full paper explores the adoption of AI-enhanced game-based learning in student-centered higher computer science and project management education. Computing education increasingly demands the integration of 21st century skills alongside domain-specific knowledge. To address this, we propose a web-based platform combining AI-driven storytelling with cooperative, game-based learning of agile project management grounded in student-centered learning. We conducted two workshops in the summer term 2024 and winter term 2024/25 in an undergraduate introductory project management course at a large Central European university. 73 students played the game at least twice in teams of three and evaluated it using the MEEGA+ framework, yielding 61 responses. The analysis revealed that 88% of students reported a positive player experience and 82% perceived a positive learning effect. 80% reported that they could practice self-organization skills. We conclude that generative AI and game-based learning can effectively augment higher computing education and foster 21st century skills.
